The Dahlgren Sharks finished out their 2011 swimming season Saturday, August 6, by competing in the Finals Championship meet with the five other teams in the Patriot Division. The Sharks finished fourth with a score of 620. The standings were as follows: Curtis Park - 799, Fawn Lake - 781.5, Lee’s Hill - 700.5, Dahlgren - 620, Chancellor - 590.5, and College Heights - 370. Caroline Bentz was the only triple winner for the team in Free, Butterfly, and Breaststroke.

The following Wednesday, August 10, the Sharks celebrated their end-of-season party. Awards and trophies were presented to all swimmers. In particular, the Coaches’ award for boys was presented to 17-year old Tyler Collins, who had been placing first in almost all of his events in the first three meets of the season. Unfortunately, due to a serious head injury, he was unable to complete the season. The Coaches’ award for girls was presented to 8-year old Caroline Bentz. Caroline was a triple winner in five of the six dual meets and also at the Finals meet. She also broke two RSL records this summer, one (her own) in freestyle, and the other in breaststroke. The highest honor, the Elizabeth “Lu” McGowan Award, was presented to 14-year old Bill Owen. This award is presented every year to one special swimmer who exhibits continued good sportsmanship, leadership, excellent swimming skills, and free spirit to have fun. It is in memory of Lu McGowan, a well-known KG swimmer who swam with the Sharks, coached the team, and also swam year round with DASK, the Sharks’ year round team (now known as the Rappahannock Raiders). In 1996, her life was tragically lost in a fire during her senior year at UVA. The Sharks have been honoring her and keeping the memory of her strong every year since Coach Guthrie began coaching the team in 1998.

The team would like to thank coaches, parents, swimmers, and the board for the dedication and support that it takes to make a successful swim team. The Sharks would also like to thank the following sponsors for their support, as well:

Thomas M. Burrell; Cottrell, DDS Dentistry; Dahlgren Officers’ Spouse Club; Dominoes/Dahlgren; Exit Reality Expertise; KG Family Chiropractor; KG Welding, Inc.; NAPA King George; Pizza Hut/Dahlgren; Rankins True Value Hardware; Rocky Top Embroidery; Communications Specialists, Inc.; A Touch of Class Catering; and Tammy Indseth Photography.
